It’s the 1st of the month so you know what time it is! Mattel answers a few of your questions about their DC related toys and collectibles. View the questions and answers below…

DCCollector - Can you explain the announcement from mattel (a couple of weeks ago) concerning an extension between mattel and DC? Or did I just totally read that wrong?

Mattel - No, we do not have any extension announcement anytime in the future. Our current contract goes through 2012.

DCCollector - Now that Swamp Thing is back on the table, are we going to see him in the DCUC line at some point?

Mattel - Swamp Thing is not “back on the table”. All character choices are proposed by Mattel and then approved by DC Comics and Warner Bros. We are big fans of Swamp Thing, but it’s ultimately up to DC comics to grant us use of this character as a toy.

DCCollector - Why doesn’t Mattel take advantage of every DC animated film/show that they can? It seems that making at least one wave of figures for each animated movie/show would be a big advertisement for both the film/show as well as the figures…

Mattel - In the end we have a finite amount of resources; it is just not possible to make toys for every single movie, TV show and comic book. We try to pick the ones that have the best longevity and longest fan following as opposed to the “style of the month” that may come and go.

DCCollector - Can we expect something entirely new from you (concerning DC) at SDCC? Not talking new waves of figures from JLU/DCUC/Brave and the Bold etc…, but actually a new line? (Green Lantern doesn’t count )

Mattel - You will just need to wait and see!

DCCollector - Now that Geoff Johns is Chief Creative Officer, does he get to approve sculpts and kind of give direction for the license or is that done by someone else?

Mattel - Geoff is a huge fan of Mattel product (he and Toy Guru are actually good friends and they will often chat at conventions on all things DC and toy related!). In his new role at DC, he can have the final say in approvals, but Geoff does not handle day-to-day approvals. We have had him over to Mattel a few times and he has had some fantastic input to share. He is a great guy to work with and very creative. (He also really loves MOTU!)

It’s the 15th of the month so you know what time it is! Mattel answers a few of your questions about their DC related toys and collectibles. View the questions and answers below…

DCCollector – Now that we have seen pictures of Sinestro Corps Batman is there a possibility the figure can be repainted before release so that he has an accurate costume? It looks nothing like the SC costume.

Mattel – All we can tell you now is this Batman is not based on the one page issue of Green Lantern from a few years back.

DCCollector - Could we possibly see smaller C&C figures down the road (like Metamorpho) or is it just big characters from now on? Seems like it could be a great way to get lower tier characters in the line.

Mattel - Yes, this is something we have been looking into. Nothing to announce right now, but stay tuned!

DCCollector - Do you have anymore DCUC figures with the Blue Beetle articulation planned for release this year?

Mattel - Not at this time, but when a figure calls for increased articulation (such as figures who wear armor) we will look into it! We don’t want to cut up the beautiful Horsemen sculpts with too many unnecessary cuts.

DCCollector - Are we eventually going to see civilian type figures in the DCUC? (ie Alfred, Gordon, Lois Lane, Iris)

Mattel - In time, yes, we would love to. We just have not gotten to them yet.

DCCollector - From your (ToyGuru) perspective, do you consider the Public Enemies figures apart of the DC Universe Classics line? Some collectors get a little anal about there collections and need to know
Mattel – We did ask the Horsemen to sculpt the heads so they would be a blend between the comic style and the animated style. We could in time get to characters like Silver Banshee in DCUC proper, but for now, we do look at the PE figures as great 6-inch comic representations of the characters.

DC Entertainment is teaming up with Mattel to bring Green Lantern to the masses! Check out the official press release below…

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) announced today a landmark year ahead for DC Comics and master toy licensee Mattel, led by programs in support of summer 2011′s Green Lantern from Warner Bros. Pictures. Under the terms of their ongoing strategic alliance, Mattel is granted unprecedented access to the complete breadth and scope of the DC Comics vault of characters, including Green Lantern and thousands of world-famous heroes and villains, such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Joker and The Riddler. Mattel will also continue its successful lines based on Batman: The Brave and the Bold and DC Super Friends, and is in the process of developing an all-new line to support Young Justice.

“The sheer volume of the DC Comics property portfolio lends itself to an incredible array of consumer offerings,” said Brad Globe, president, Warner Bros. Consumer Products. “As master licensee, Mattel has consistently created innovative products that are true to the spirit of the DC Comics heroes and villains from which they are inspired. We look forward to seeing the results of the next wave of property collaborations.”

Green Lantern is set to light up movie screens around the world in summer 2011. Bringing the enduringly popular DC Super Hero to the big screen for the first time, Green Lantern stars Ryan Reynolds in the title role as the newest member of the Green Lantern Corps. Each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers, but when a new enemy threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate, and the fate of Earth, lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

“The Green Lantern film has an incredibly wide merchandise appeal,” said Donald De Line, Producer, Green Lantern. “The potential is there for amazing toys and merchandise because Green Lantern’s ring can create anything the imagination can conjure. From space stations and vehicles to alien action figures, the possibilities are just endless.”

Mattel is launching a rich and comprehensive line of products based on the film for both kids and adult fans alike. The multi-category toy line includes Basic and Deluxe Action Figures, Figure/Vehicles, Role Play, Playsets, Games, Puzzles and Vehicles. Additionally, each Action Figure toy comes complete with a Green Lantern ring in order for kids to feel as if they, too, have been “chosen” to be a Green Lantern. The Deluxe Action Figures have a special feature that allows kids to truly replicate the elements in the film, and come with accessories that unfold into completely different items for unlimited hours of play.

“Mattel’s Green Lantern toy program is going to introduce Green Lanterns like Hal Jordan and Kilowog to new fans everywhere,” said DC Entertainment chief creative officer and Green Lantern co-producer Geoff Johns. “It is going to be amazing to watch the world discover the Green Lantern mythology.”

In order to fully realize the potential array of Green Lantern offerings, Mattel is supporting the film across key Mattel Brands such as Hot Wheels®, Tyco® R/C and UNO®. Collectors will also be pleased to discover that Mattel is releasing a Green Lantern “Movie Masters®” line of highly detailed figures based on the film, which are sculpted by the “Four Horseman” design team. Mattel’s Green Lantern product lines hit retail in summer 2011.

“We have a fantastic global partnership with WBCP and we’re thrilled to be working with them on the release of their next super hero blockbuster film. The beauty of Green Lantern is that he is an inspirational super hero with a rich, unmatched heritage that will appeal to boys of all ages. Adult collectors will be attracted to our highly detailed line of action figures and boys will be attracted to our playsets, role-play toys and vehicles because of the innovation infused throughout the entire line,” said Tim Kilpin, general manager, Mattel Brands.

Mattel is also rolling out products inspired by Young Justice, which will premiere on Cartoon Network during the 2010-2011 season. This all-new series is produced by Warner Bros. Animation and is based on characters from DC Comics. Featuring a team of teenage heroes, the show brings the popular comic to the small screen with favorites including Robin, Aqualad, Kid Flash, Superboy, Miss Martian and Artemis. Product offerings from Mattel include figures, playsets and other show-inspired lines.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold fans can prepare for the release of “Total Armor” toys based on the popular Warner Bros. Animation series airing on Cartoon Network. “Total Armor” means Batman and his allies will be equipped with additional, new weaponry and high-tech gadgets. For example, “Magma Armor” Batman will feature a detachable water blaster with storage tanks. “Tank Blaster” Batman comes with industrial armor styling and a massive cannon with multiple projectiles. Even the “Total Armor” Batmobile is getting upgraded with armored plates and two projectile-firing launchers. Additionally, all figures and vehicles will still have sockets in order to increase the customization ability by kids. Mattel will also offer Role Play items including the Telescoping Battle Sword and Batman’s Utility Belt. Items in the “Total Armor” line will be available in spring 2011.

Mattel and Fisher-Price are continuing to experience tremendous success with the popular Super Friends line of products created for boys ages three to eight. Building on a successful 2009, Fisher-Price has developed new motorized vehicles, figures and playsets, including the all-new Imaginext® Joker’s Fun House and building sets from TrioTM. The Fisher-Price Smart Cycle®– a stationary bike, learning center and arcade game system – will offer Batman and Green Lantern titles. The iXLTM Learning System, a 6-in-1 portable smart device, will feature the Batman: The Brave and the BoldTM software title. These products will be available this fall. Additionally the Power Wheels® brand is in on the Super Friends action with the BatmanTM, Lil’QuadTM and BatmanTM Lights & Sounds Trike ride-on vehicles, which are available now.

It’s the 1st of the month so you know what time it is! Mattel answers a few of your questions about their DC related toys and collectibles. View the questions and answers below…

DCCollector.com - Could we one day see CnC figures that are a bit taller than what we currently have? Or a way to release some in bigger form? Some figures could benefit from it such as Atom Smasher.

Mattel - It is the size of the package that limits a C&C to 10 inches. We could do a taller one, but we would need to spread him or her out over more figures (like two waves) to get it any taller.

DCCollector.com - Can we expect Back Lantern figures or would they be considered to “violent” for the Wal-Mart/Target shelves?

Mattel - We are totally doing Black Lanterns! Just you wait!

DCCollector.com - How do you decide which DCUC figures get re-released as an All Star figure?

Mattel – Figure re-releases are determined based on sales figures plus fan demand plus characters that will appeal to kids/non-hardcore fans (i.e the general public and moms).

DCCollector.com - Can you explain the randomness of the Super Powers stands inserted into packages? Desaad was pictured with one in multiple images online, but mine came with a regular stand.

Get ready Legion fans! Toyfare #158 will have the first announcement for Legion of Super-Hero figures from Mattel! You could kind of guess this was coming after the inclusion of Validus in DC Universe Classics wave 15. Now will it be an entire wave of Legion or just the beginning of Legion figures (with a couple) in the line? Only time (and maybe ToyFare) will tell!

TOYFARE #158 LEGION OF SUPER HEROES

Last week we linked to an interview with Mattel’s Toy Guru and ActionFigureInsider about Justice League Unlimited. Well here is part 2 of that interview. You can check out an excerpt here and then head on over to Action Figure Insider for the rest of the interview!

AFi: On that same note how much cost difference, in general, is just a repaint of a figure as opposed to a figure that would need new tooling? (Not looking for an actual number, just really is it more cost effective?)

TG: New tools always cost the most amount of money. The more new parts, the more expensive. Repaints are less expensive but still have a cost attached to them. Straight re-releases are the least expensive and are often needed to keep a line’s overall costs low.

AFi: Will we ever see a new head and longer legs for Superman? He’s always looking down and too small to fit in properly. He’s DC’s flagship character.

TG: This is a possibility. While we know new Superman parts and a new female buck are high on fans wish lists, we have such a limited tooling budget that we’d honestly prefer to invest money into 100% new heads and capes for brand 100% new character rather then make slight adjustments to existing figures that kids may not recognize; after all, this line must appeal to kids as well as collectors to remain viable at retail.
